Start with the problem, not the product
A new home creates dozens of purchase opportunities at once. The useful question is not “What could I buy?” but “What problem must I solve now?” Keep the first round focused on safety, access, basic cleaning, simple repairs, and anything that prevents avoidable damage.
Do first
- Confirm keys, locks, garage remotes, and access codes.
- Locate water, gas, and electrical shutoffs.
- Test smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms.
- Set up one cleaning kit, one tool kit, and first-night supplies.
Handle soon
- Record appliance and equipment model numbers.
- Replace HVAC filters if appropriate and note the size.
- Inspect visible leaks, drains, exterior drainage, and lighting.
- Finish the most-used bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and work areas.
Plan for later
- Build seasonal maintenance reminders.
- Add storage only after unpacking exposes real gaps.
- Plan large furniture and smart-home purchases after measuring and living in the space.
Usually safe to delay
- Decorative matching sets.
- Specialty appliances without a recurring use.
- Large organizing systems before you know what must be stored.
A simple buying rule
If an item is expensive, hard to return, or tied to a system you have not lived with yet, wait until you understand the space. Measure twice, confirm compatibility, compare total ownership cost, and leave room in the budget for repairs you did not expect.
Before you order
- Measure the actual space and doorway clearances.
- Check electrical, plumbing, fuel, Wi-Fi, or mounting requirements.
- Confirm the return window and whether opened items can be returned.
- Save model numbers for installed appliances and equipment.
- Verify current price and availability directly with the retailer.
